As teachers, we often hear that "math is universal;" however, math does not exist in a vacuum and is highly influenced by culture and language. TODOS is an international, professional organization that advocates for equity and high-quality math education for ALL students, especially our Latino students. Below are four interrelated ideas that permeate the organization's work with teachers:
- Mathematics is cultural.
- Families have many mathematical strengths and are assets for their children.
- Mathematics exists in myriad ways in the everyday lives of families in their home and community.
- Learning is most powerful when families, students, and teachers are co-learners.
