Great DLI Resources: The Granite School District in Salt Lake City, UT has created academic vocabulary lists AND cards for grades K through 6th. The cards are available in English and Spanish (as well as French, Chinese, and Russian) with the word and an image. Also, available on the website are TONS of additional supports and RESOURCES, including TEMPLATES for the following: Vocabulary Card, Analogies, Comparing Terms, Journal Page, and Word Wall; a vocabulary Power Point, Activities & Lessons.

Standards of Mathematical Practice

The Math Standards also expect students to solve problems, to apply what they have learned, to reason, explain and share their ideas with others. The Standards for Mathematical Practices tell us how mathematically proficient students who truly understand and know how to use mathematics do. 
 
These students:
 
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Is Math Really Universal?

As teachers, we often hear that "math is universal;" however, math does not exist in a vacuum and is highly influenced by culture and language. TODOS is an international, professional organization that advocates for equity and high-quality math education for ALL students, especially our Latino students. Below are four interrelated ideas that permeate the organization's work with teachers:

  1. Mathematics is cultural.
  2. Families have many mathematical strengths and are assets for their children.
  3. Mathematics exists in myriad ways in the everyday lives of families in their home and community.
  4. Learning is most powerful when families, students, and teachers are co-learners.
