Bilingual People are like Brain 'Bodybuilders'

 

Brain bodybuilder

A 2014 study shows that people who speak two languages may have brains that are more efficient at language processing and other tasks. Brain scans showed that people who spoke only one language had to work harder to focus on a single word. Bilinguals are much better at ignoring irrelevant words.

Bilingual Effects in the Brain

A 2012 study found that certain brain functions are enhanced in teenagers who are fluent in more than one language. The finding provides new insight into how our senses help shape our brains.

“Bilingualism serves as enrichment for the brain and has real consequences when it comes to executive function, specifically attention and working memory.”
