According to the APS Standard of Services, all elementary schools are required to offer a world language option. The two models of programming are Exposure and Proficiency. The determination of the program model should be established at the school and cluster levels and should be aligned with cluster focus and overall plan for world language progression and programming.
The Exposure model focuses on an introduction to culture and language and is taught primarily in English. On the other hand, the focus of the Proficiency model is oral and written proficiency; thus, the course is taught primarily in the target language. According to the APS Standards of Service, all IB PYP authorized schools are required at a minimum to begin the Proficiency model in 2nd grade. Because the language of instruction and the overall goal for the two program models varies considerably, the selection of the program model will determine the course number to be used for scheduling. The scheduling of time less than 130 minutes per week, is an Exposure model.
Scheduling:
Exposure |
30 – 90 minutes per week |
Proficiency |
30 minutes daily or 45 minutes three times per week |
World Language teachers should be provided with a schedule that allows for planning time equivalent to other teachers in the building. If the world language teacher is itinerant and travels between two or more campuses, travel time must also be incorporated into the daily schedule. Itinerant travel costs are covered in the district World Language budget and itinerant World Language teachers will be required to submit mileage documents monthly to the Office of ESOL & World Languages.
Schools should select the course numbers that reflect the appropriate program model. These numbers have been loaded into IC.
