Understanding and assessing language performance requires teachers to understand the purpose of the communication. ACTFL has identified three Modes of Communication that provide world language teachers with the organizing principles for describing language performance across the three ranges: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each Mode of Communication helps better define the communicative purpose of behind the language.
